Defining Treatment Failure in uUTIs

Although relapse and recurrence are defined in clinical practice guidelines, treatment failure is not formally defined6–8

In two retrospective cohort studies involving approximately 610,000 women diagnosed with uUTIs in outpatient settings and prescribed empiric antibiotic therapy, treatment failure was defined by the occurrence of any of the following within 28 days of index date5,9:

Diagnosis of a UTI in an acute care setting

Administration of an IV antibiotic

Certain patient characteristics can increase risk of treatment failure9:

Older age

History of recurrent UTI

Oral antibiotics
