Belimumab was the first biologic approved for both systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and active lupus nephritis (LN) and is indicated for patients aged ≥5 years with active SLE or active LN who are receiving standard therapy.1
Belimumab inhibits B-lymphocyte stimulator (BLyS), a cytokine involved in B-cell survival and differentiation.1-2 By binding soluble BLyS, BENLYSTA inhibits the survival of B cells, including autoreactive B cells, involved in lupus pathogenesis. 1-2
